One question..... I have 500 miles on my bike currently, in 3 weeks I'm riding to Sturgis. It's 800 miles round trip not including the ton of riding I'm going to do there. Needless to say I'll be waaaaay over my 1k service check. Do I A. Change the oil & filter right before I leave and call it good but when I get back slap her in for service or B. Hold off everything until I get back or C. Ask the service tech what my dealer recommends when I'm up at bike night tonight?

why don't you take your bike on a 2day trip, ride the remaining 500miles and bring it in for a check before you head to Sturgis?

 

You could contact a dealer in the SD area and get it done there, or one along the way too.

...or put another 500 on it quick before you go.

 

Ya I think I'm going to call Rapid Harley..last year my dealer (Thunder Mtn) had set up a huge tent there selling their bikes so maybe I can work something out. I plan on buying a filter tonight and changing the oil & filter before I go. I've notice in just those few miles that my oil went from clear to getting black anyways

 

Change all your fluids, not just oil/filter. Don't forget the horn fluid, mine was pretty nasty at 1,000 miles.

Give the bike a good look over for loose missing bolts, frayed belt, etc.

Ride to sturgis and have a great time.

That first oil change is an important one, i did mine at 500 miles anyway just to make sure i got any new motor hunks and chunks out.
