Major Problem With T-Bars & Speedometer Install
Check this nightmare out:
My bike has been in a shop for nearly a month. My only request was t-bars, stainless cables, and a new speedometer. Sound simple for a 2005 FXDCI? Try again.
First, they install a Drag Specialities speedo WITHOUT mileage gauge... if and when I sell this treasure, I would have no proof of miles put on the bike. I call them and tell them this won't work... I like the speedo, but it needs to have a mileage gauge. Here is where it gets horrific!
I pick up the bike 2 days ago... remember, the bike was initially given to them to work on at the end of June. The new speedo is from AUTOMETER. It looks slick and has the mileage gauge. I drive off thinking everything is finally ok. Wrong.
As soon as I reach about 35 mph and let up on the throttle, I hear the engine talking to me in a language I have never heard. It is trying to backfire. As I approach lower speeds I pull in the clutch to downshift.... the engine dies right in the middle of traffic. Dangerous to say the least.
The bike starts no problem, but this scenario continues all the way home. Why I didn't just return it right then and there I still don't know... nonetheless, the bike was returned the next day.
After another 24 hours here is the result.... the speedo is NOT compatible and the wiring caused the problems. Also, to make sure you know all the symptoms, the turn signals did not cancel out as they should have.
End result.... the bike will be picked up tomorrow with t-bars, stainless cables, but no speedo. I still have the stock, but I will just wait until I can find a compatible one and have an HD dealership do it. They are telling me the bike is working perfectly without the stock speedo, and if that is the case... that's better since I will be making a purchase of another speedo soon.
Do any of you know of any HD speedos that will be nice on t-bars? If you have a pic of one on your bike with t-bars, please forward me a photo at ricardob@***.net
Obviously, the stock one is huge and full of wires and defeats the purpose of having t-bars in the first place. I want something small, slick, and that also shows mileage put on the bike. What a nightmare this has been. My entire summer vacation basically without my bike. Please help.

Hummm,.... I love the look of T-bars as well. Sorry for all of your problems. Take a look at the Harley assessories catalog and there are several different styles of mini speedo and other gauges and mounts that will work. Also,... if you get one of the Harley mini speedo units your dealer can reinstate your mileage onto that new one. The setup that might work best for you is get one of the accutronix T-bar instrument mounts and then get the H-D mini speedo mounting bracket that will also house your idiot lights.
Good luck,
John
Good luck,

Man I hear ya in a way. I put on chubby bars and used an older guage bracket from a member on here to make my factory speedometer work for now. I have been cruising all the catalogs to get it off the bars or make it a lot smaller. Cant find much, there is a bracket to mount to the rocker box with an oil guage but way too much dough for that baby.
Please keep me updated on what you find, this is going to be my next project.

I really like the Dakota Digital oval gauge. Speedo, tach, indicater lamps, and some other stuff. I've seen it mounted to the bottom of T bars, and it's looks good; simple and neat.
The key is whether a speedo is compatible with my '05 Dyna Fuel Injected. The autometer speedo was very slick... but not compatible. Anyone have any HD speedos that will work and a part #? Thanks. Cost is not an issue, but of course, I don't want to buy something that is ridiculously overpriced.
