Yes it is the HD 6 spoke wheel, and the pulley slots are countersunk. My spacers is only 1/8" thicker than the original one. Should not have been enough but again, no reason for the bolts to be only 1.5" in the first place.

Well here are my thoughts on the whole fiasco now that she is back on the road.

1. The pulley bolts are too short, being they are not in a steel wheel the threads are too weak to handle the torque when such short bolts are used.

2. The thread holes are not a finite depth, so why use 1.5" bolts to begin with?

3. Mine actually wobbled the holes ever so slightly in the hub, this allowed them to come loose, again because they were too damn short. Once they wobbled slightly there was no turning back.

4. You can easily use 2.5" bolts in these wheels, I suggest you swap them next time you have the wheel out, just my .02, I also used grade 8.

5. Run a tap down the threads and thoroughly clean them out before applying loctite. They are 7/16" x 14 threads.

6. Check them more frequently than every other week like I have been doing. I just checked them 2 weeks ago and they were on my maintenance list for this weekend. So this appears to have been sudden and not a gradual loosening as I would have thought.

Well, that is interesting, the ones I took out are the same length as the previous ones, so now I would really like to know where the hell they came from.
The most recent bolts were bought at an Indy shop and I asked for pulley bolts for an 05 Dyna.
I did not suspect anything since they were the same length as the ones I took out.
All I can say now is "WTF over"?

I would be really curious to know what others that have sheared bolts had, and where they got them. This would not have happened with 2.25" bolts.

Well there is the problem...torqued, loctited, and re-torqued...I never torque mine.

Richard - Mud's post sparked me to take a look at my rear end. My parts manual also lists Mud's part # of 3737A

If I look from the rear disc brake side through the laced wheel, I can see the hub is tapped all the way through. There is about 1/4" of threads exposed before I see the bottom of the pully bolt.

 

Yeah, my parts manual lists the same number, but it does not list any dimensions or I would have known I had the wrong bolts.
What gets me is the bolts I took out before the ones that went south on me were the same and they had been in there for over 15k without a problem. Those were put in by Eastern Performance when I had them mount the new wheel and tire.
Just proves one thing, no one else will lay a wrench on my ride.

 

Since you went with 2.5" bolts and removed the 1.5", I'd say it's pretty much bullet proof now.
So I won't worry about flying shrapnel riding behind you this weekend...
