You can start out with something like this and add to it as you go.

Good advice from WGB. I've had Craftsman stuff for 40+ years, still good.
And I get a nice feeling when I return a screwdriver that's obviously been used as a pry-bar, chisel, whatever, and they give me a new one, no questions asked.

Since I don't use tools professionally, they more than suffice, and I can't justify spending 4, 5 or 10X more for the Pro-quality stuff (Snap-on, Matco, Proto, etc)

Maybe for a few specialty items.

I got a set of Craftsman vise grips for Christmas. They are good, except for the large CHINA stamp on them.

Don't forget to buy some metric wrenches as well and the torx T27 bit....

***dyna models metric sizes database***

How to prevent TORX screws being stripped

Kobalt makes decent stuff too. Comparable to Craftsman and you get them at Lowes. Stanley and Mac are made by the same people and I think Snap on, Blue Point and Kobalt are the same producer too.

I've had Craftsman tools for years. Started off with one of their smaller sets and added on as needed. I keep having to add boxes because I have so many tools I run out of room. Craftsman tools are great and I've never had a problem swapping them out if I break one which isn't very often. I'm sure there are other brands out there that are just as good quality or better, but sometimes convenience wins out.
