What should i expect to pay a dealer for the 1k service
#21
mine was over $300 but i did want them to do the fiorst service for warranty reasons. but they wont do anymore. i bought mine at ft hood hd and they lost the keys 1 day after getting the bike in then when the detachable sissy bar was rattling they said it was for a soft tail not a dyna. a soft tail is too wide for a dyna. these guys are hacks! i used to ride to temple to horny toads to get my bike serviced or buy parts even though the same guy owned both even the service guys talked sh$t about ft hood hd.

When I went in for my first service I almost puked when they handed me the bill. It was north of $300. Quicky Lube does my car for $20. Since then I've used the HD mechanic for a large police department and he charges $150. My reasoning is that he knows a lot more than I do when it comes to the safety of the bike, but I'll probably get the manual and start doing it myself.

There is another advantage to doing the service yourself besides saving a bunch of money. You will gain a lot of confidence in your bike and your ability to fix it. I have seen plenty of people that won't ride more than 50 miles from home because something might break.
Dealers do need to make money though. If they were all out of business, we would have to go to the Honda dealer. I try to purchase my parts at my local dealer if it is at all reasonable.
The service manual explains everything to do for the 1K. The wash job takes longer than everything else.

I asked the sae question not too long ago for a Limited. The responses I gto were all pretty much the same as here. Do it your self. I ordered the manual and I am going to get the filters and fluids from an indy dealer who builds awesome bike down the street form my house, Shadley brothers, is the indy, they build insane bikes, and are nice guys.
I did the work on my metrics and this is my first HD so I am a little nervous but I am pretty sure if I take my time things will be fine.

This thread makes me want to throw up. If I even suggested that I was going to take my bike to the dealership in front of a select few of my friends/relatives I think I might get myself into a fight. Not trying to be a bad *** because I'm not, but I recieve enough crap that I bought a bike and didn't build one. Buy the oil/filters and save a few bucks. If you arent comfortable, buy your buddy some beers to show you. Dealers are for warranty work.
