Default I need some help on my future FXD, Edited: I got the 02 LR

Well I looked at it, sat on it , and rode the 02 Low rider on Mon and I thought 7k was a decent deal. Might not have been the best deal but I thought it was very fair, and as clean as it is, I was sold, so I bought it. All the cash I had was 7k anyways and I didnt want to finance another couple grand, or wait till the end of summer to get into a 07-08 street bob either..

I love it. It rides great, soaks up bumps great. It doesnt corner like my GSXR did but hey whats a little pipe scrapping..lol

This bike WAS flawless, literally.. Till on the way home I cornered a right hander too fast I guess and scrapped the pipe.. Oh well..

I will change the bars/risers and maybe forward foot controls..

What bars do you guys suggest? I know there are lots o options. I had 14" R6C apes on my last sportster and liked them a lot. But not sure if the Ape hanger bobber look is gonna work on this bike.

Maybe I should try some taller straight type risers first.. It feels like Im a little hunched over right now..I guess I should just sit up straighter.

Here it is.

Original Post:

Hi guys, I am in the process of selling off my current gun collection to fund a new ride. The last I time I did this was a few years ago and I started out on a 07'FZ1 then went to a 05' GSXR 1k then went to a 97' 883 sportster that I bobbed out.

I sold the sporty for obvious reasons..lol.. I knew it was too small but I wanted to try it out for a while. It was fun and im glad I did..

Now I am definitely decided on a Dyna of some sort. I like the look, and from what I read they ride and handle great. I went and sat on a new Street bob,Fat bob and they seem to fit me good. The sportster was always about 6" too short and I would always sit up high on the back of the seat.

There is a Very nice mostly stock 88"-5-speed 2002 Dyna Low rider with some good stuff added, that only has 9k miles on it near me for a decent price.. I think I could get him to to 7k pretty easily.

I love the street bobs and that would be my first choice but I dont have the extra 2-3grand to get into a used one right now. I might wait and save up more, just not sure. Summers are short up here in the Northwest and my lil bro and stepdad bought bikes a few months after I sold mine.. So I would like to ride with them this summer, but??

My main question is, what is the difference of the 2002-2006 and above motors?

I see they went to 96" motors on the 2007's.

Is the 96" fuel injected matched with a 6-speed worth waiting and the extra money?

Is the 2002 88" the B version or ?

Thanks for info on these bikes.

Dirk

7k for an almost 10 yr old bike seems pretty steep.

I picked up my 08 last year in 2010 for $8k with a little over 2,000 miles.

I don't know much about the 88's, but i will tell you this, even if a carbed bike sounds better than FI (and it does) I would never give up my fuel injection again.

Thanks guys. stev0n, sounds like you got an excellent deal. I agree that 7k is a little steep.. But sheesh, You can barely get a sportster around here for 7k. Ppl think they have g
old plated Harleys..
fxd03, dont get me wrong, I would love to test ride some bikes but the last time I checked NOBODY is gonna hand over the keys to their 12k ride and say, hey man take it out on the freeway and see what you think..lol.. I should see if the local HD dealer allows test rides. If they do, I doubt they let ppl go out on the freeways/highways.

This isnt a, which bike is gonna make me cooler thread either.. I just want to learn a little more about the differences of motors/rides.. I definitely wish I could ride some to find out..

I think 7K is a fair price with that mileage. I paid 7.5K for my '04 injected Superglide and it already had a stage 1. I think I spent about 2K this winter on chrome, seat, etc. Trying to decide on wheels.

I've got a carbed 02 and an EFI 05. The carb bike is easier on the wallet for any upgrades concerning fuel, but you have to have a little patience during the bike warming up to temp. IMHO the weak link in the 99' thru 05' twin cam 88's are the cam chain tension shoes. Made out of a material that wears differently in those bikes. Other than that it's a fine engine.

The Lowrider is a superior bike, the top of the Dyna line. It's worth every bit of $7k.
KBB trade in value is $6k and retail is $8k, so $7k is a good price for a low milage bike.

Ya..? Better than a Street bob with a 96" 6-speed?

Is this a big problem? Is it one of those parts that goes and causes Havoc on the whole top end? I admit I dont know **** about the insides of these motors.. Something I hope to change.
