Dr. V.,
Please see my post today to Ride. It worked well for me. I came up with the same idea. Good thinking. I also wished there was a zerk. Is there any reason that some one could drill and tap a fitting.

On my 08 I losen the top nut till it's hanging on by a couple threads. Then I losen the UPPER tree pinch bolts & pull the handel bars up, which pulls the top tree up & away from the star nut.

I'm then able to tighten/losen the front fork stem bearings, slide the top tree back into place, tighten the top nut - then the pinch bolts and preform the 'fall away' test as per the service manual.
You need to loosen the lower tree pinch bolts. The preload on the bearings comes from how snug the lower tree is on the steering head. The adjuster moves the tree up or down on the fork tubes. If the pinch bolts on the tree are torqued, it won't be able to move. If you're performing the fallaway test as the per the service manual for an '08 FXDF, you'll see that the adjustment procedure calls for loosening the lower pinch bolts before adjusting the star nut.
