Anybody got any advice on adjusting the steering head on a Dyna.
I'm a little confused with the method in the manual saying that after installing the adjusting nut, the assembly should be loose. Then install the top triple tree, washer, and the hex nut. After that, torque the top hex nut to 80 ft/lb and adjust for fall away.
Seems to me that you are just tightenning between the adjusting nut on one side of the top triple tree and the hex nut on the other side.
Prior to retightening the stem bolt, loosen the lower tree pinch bolts, thump the lower tree with a rubber mallet to loosen the tubes in the lower tree, do fall away and adjust accordingly. then tighten lower pinch bolts. Do this with front wheel off the ground. Loosening the pinch bolts allows the upper and lower trees to be drawn together and it takes out the slop in the bearings.
I understand this for older style trees but at least my '06 has an adjusting nut just below the top triple tree. So how is tightenning a second nut that is directly above it going to pull the trees together?
