04 Lowrider - Safely change from 150/80B-16, 3.00" rim, to 160/80B-16 tire, 3.50"rim?
Just completed 10,000 mile trip Outside from Alaska down AlCan and back to lower 48. Had on stock Dunlop D401s. The ride was fast, hard, wet and abusive on bike and tires - rear tire bald and needs replacing. That said, the 401s handled and performed well - no real complaints. However, given the serious abuse from, potholes, frost heaves and 1+ inch road section lips, I want to change to a more robust tire, with a higher load rating and deeper tread, maybe longer tread life. and, hopefully without expensive structural modifications to the bike. My stock rim is 16"X3." I'd like to go to a D417 160/80B-16, GT501 160/80B-16, or maybe an Elite 3. But, all those tires "recommend" a 3.50" rim. And, I can't translate the specs on the Elite 3. A,) Would any of those tires fit?, B.) Would there be a fitment issue or a safety issue with long distance, high speed, hard riding, fitting a larger diameter tire on a smaller rim? I tried to contact Dunlop - no phone contact #. And, I read a # of threads on this forum, and still don't have clarity. The real issue is the type of riding the tire will be subjected to. Any technical information would be appreciated. Oh, I have a long winter to figure this out. Thx >>>>>>
