I've got 25k miles on my '07 and still on the original brake pads.

I'm sure that'll blow the avg right out of the water.

lol Only way to know if you're close to needing pads is to compare your's to a new set. Measuring thickness would be the best option. Think that info would be in a service manual but I could be wrong.

Guess it wouldn't hurt to have a set on hand not that big of a job and I would be able to compare new to old like you suggested

From the service manual:

Always replace brake pads in complete sets for correct
and safe brake operation. Improper brake operation could
result in death or serious injury. (00111a)
See Figure 1-33. Replace brake pads (3) if brake pad friction
material on either the front or rear caliper is worn to 0.04
in. (1.02 mm) or less above the backing plate (4). Always
replace both pads in a caliper as a set. See 1.16 BRAKE PADS
AND DISCS, Brake Pad Replacement.

Lou, I replaced my rear pads in April with 12-14000 miles on them right before coming up to SJ (they were worn pretty good). I now have 22,500 and they are 50% worn (remember this is the rear brakes only). The fronts have an easy 75% of ware left on them.

Yea, I know I rely on my rear brake more than my fronts, that's just the way I learned, as most of the time back in the day the front brakes were either not there, or they just didn't work real good.

Yes, having a set of brakes set aside for when you need them is not a bad idea, they seem to go out when the dealer is closed, and we know how much down time sucks.

I just replaced my front pads at 7500 mi but my rear pads were still good. I've got an 03 WG which I bought used a few months ago with 4700 mi on it. I replaced front tire at same time, not so much due to thread wear but because it looked dry rotted. The previous owner didn't ride this bike much but I think a new rear tire and possibly rear pads were put on when he traded it in, they looked pretty good. The front pads were pretty worn down even at 4700 mi. I don't know what that dude was doing. LOL. Your style of riding and more importantly your geographical location contributes to your pad wear. SC longhair probably doesn't ride in sit in go traffic like you and I do. I got stuck in it all the time on 98 down here Florabama. I think it's normal wear for you.

Mileage on brake pads will vary with riding style, do you use gears to slow down or just your brakes? I replaced mine around 10k, because I replaced my calipers with chrome units, they still had miles to go. I am still running the ones I put in during the swap and I am over 40k now (30k on the pads).

I do now but you're right up until a month ago I lived in the country in South Carolina where there was no traffic whatsoever. It was a beautiful thing.

In fact, just yesterday (10/9) I sat in stop and go traffic for 3+hrs and only traveled 40mi. Roll 100 ft. Stop. Roll 100 ft. stop. Roll 100ft. stop. That went on for 3hrs. I was fixin' to pull my hair out after the first 5min.
