Buy yourself a Harley repair manual and learn how to work on and troubleshoot your problems yourself. Quit giving your hard earned cash to the stealer.

Guys I have the manual, but check your own, does it have a diagnostic description of what in your starter is defective? NO it says make sure your battery is charged and your cables are plugged and tight the ignition on and the start/run switch is in the run position, othewise give it over to a qualified Harley technician. And in the fine print it says " also make sure you are wearing clean underware" !

@vheflin/ I have a powervision with a base map from Jamie long at fuel moto which is auto-corrected whenever I feel the need to do some auto-tuning.

i agree, i would at minimum be asking for a credit for the $380 from the general manager of that dealership, explain what happened and show him all of the paperwork showing how is techs missed it first time around.

I don't need paper, they have it all in the computer, I'm there minimum 1ce a week and everyone there knows me. ( I do have the bill so ya i'm covered) It would be nice for them to credit the full, but the trade off is they have opened the primary and pulled the clutch basket ,and only charged .5 hour for that I would settle for the part 150$ + 15% tax = 172$, give or take , credit against the new starter and free install and be on my way with my ride tomorrow.
But I get the sick feeling they will not be honourable regardless of how much I spend there.
I'll keep you posted.

The trouble with this dealer is they are too used to warranty work where they simply change out anything that is gone wrong and HD pays the bills, they don't bother troubleshooting. Wait till they find out i can get a rebuilt starter for less than half and bolt it up myself.

first hd doesn't pay dealers to just throw parts at a bike until its fixed if they can't prove it needed it they don't get paid. Second they aren't going to give a flying f**k if you can get a used starter for half the price of the new one they sold you. Third if you want them to do anything for you the best way is to present the facts to them in the nicest way possible if you have a case they will more than likely work with you.

I ticked its your fault. In my view if your silly enough to just fork out hard earned cash to anyone WITHOUT a garantee that what they are doing will resolve the problem then you get what you pay for - so stop complaining. Better still learn how to work on your bike and that way you will actually be able to figure out future problems yourself - oddly enough 90% of the issues on my bike have come just after i have had to get an Indy or the Dealer look at my bike.

If you ride and wrench your own bike you soon get a 'feel' for how the thing works, so if you do have problems you become more knowledgable at resolving them yourself.

Wow do you really think I don't know that? I've been going to this dealer for 5 years, I don't recall slamming or slandering my dealer in any of my comments in the first place... I was just worried how they would respond to the situation so I i posted here...You get it now? My comment about the rebuilt starter is actually the indication I am about to undertake alot mor of the actual wrenching since I am no longer on the warranty. You really should try to interpret more than skim over comments and throw your "knowledge" around like that.

Well my faith was weak ! I could have sounded more positive I suppose!

Wise words to a silly ,complaining man, who can only hope to be able to unfasten a screw some day if I study. Well thank you sensei, do you think i don't do as much as I can myself? "Get a feel for how it works" wow man thank you master for those wise words too! Who the hell you think your talking to any way? Some 19 year old?

Those who ticked "sucks" thank you for your support in these trying times, it's been real! lol

At least nobody ticked "not suck" that would have been just cold !

Those who ticked "my fault" thank you for your comprehension and taking the time to tell me to just "man up little screaming girl"

Those who ticked their fault I beleive actually read what was written and thank you for your comments!

AND it turns out my dealer is installing a brand new HD oem upgraded starter at cost woithout tax or installation fee for the little mess up and I have been riding a Road King since Friday also on their tab.

So since it was the starter in the first place and they didn't catch it my 380$ is credited towards the new starter and i just pay the balance for the part as mentioned which is the part I needed in the first place and would have originally cost roughly 800$ after paying install, taxes and what not. And that means I am actually saving 270$ of "hard eaned" ....and I should have the bike back thursday.

I guess all of this means it was their fault and does not actually suck for me!!! And I do have a good dealer and they are called harley davidson montreal

Cheers!

I was just about to tick off "sucks" when I read your last post. Now it seems like it doesn't suck anymore. It's just too bad it took so long for it not to suck.

Well I apologize if I offended you in some way but, saying your dealer don't troubleshoot and just replaces parts because that's what they're used to comes off as slamming and/or slander. As for the starter when you use words like "wait til they find out" it implies that you're going to use it as some kind of leverage against them. At the end of the day I'm happy that it turned out in your favor. Again I do apologize if you've been offended by my offering of "knowledge".

you paid way too much for that starter..could of bought a new chrome one or under $200. it is only a few bolts to change.. never take a bike to a dealer unless it is under warranty, you will get screwed every time by a tech a year out of school, making almost minimum wage..in most cases, the service dept carries the business.. it is sad if a mechanic cant point out failing starter
