This may have already been said but if you have noticed that the pump doesn't prime during a complete ignition key off/on, then it's the 3 second timer in the system relay. Once running, the crank position sensor then tells the ECM the engine is running and the fuel pump runs all the time. The start and system relays are usually the same part number and both have the timer function. It is unused in the start, so switching them is a good check as long as both have the same number. I seriously doubt it's a filter or in the tank problem. Idle is the first to go on a stopped up filter.

Well just an update with this issue. I replaced both relays (starter and system) only cost me $13 and change at the dealer. I rode all day yesterday 4/27/14 and I not once had a starting issue. Bike fired up every time. So I feel that replacing the relays (mainly the system relay) fixed the problem. Thanks again to all those that gave opinions and advice. I love this forum.

Awesome!! Definitely beats an expensive diagnostic test at Harley vs a $13 fix...lol!

Another problem you just don't see with a carburetor...

Intermittent problems are the worst. Sometimes throwing inexpensive parts at a problem until it goes away is cheaper than isolating the problem.

This could have been the relays; could have been the connections on the relays...the probability of two relays going out at the same time is like hitting two double-down Black Jack hands in a row at Vegas...just say'n...

Glad you got it fixed...Did the start and system relays on your 2008 have the same part number on the paperwork?
