I had nothing but problems with CVP crap. Retrofitted a CV40 to my '07 SB. You will never get it right if the idle packing is bad. So CVP does have a good packing kit. In my 96" I had decel popping with blue and orange flames - with the 48 slow speed jet (supplied by CVP as the "correct" jet.) Dropped to a 46, with 2 1/2 turns out on the mixture screw. This should also work on your 88"er. E clip in notch #3 from the top with 1 washer under the clip and shim up the top of the needle valve so there is no up/down movement of the needle in the assembled vacuum piston assembly. As far as the correct needle valve to use, there are many opinions on what works best.

I could not get an overhaul kit from the local dealer and the CVP overhaul kit was reasonably priced and came highly recommended by a very respected local indy. I also got the 46 and 185 jets with the new mixture adjust needle and packing kit from CVP. I have not installed the jets and I will put the new mixture adjust and packing kit in today or tomorrow. Then if I am still having issues, I will pull the carb back off and go back through it again and see if there is something I missed or went back together wrong.

If the carb is "sneezeing"(lean) with a 48 pilot, keep bumping that circuit up until it stops.
Not familiar with that pipe, but that could be the root issue.

If you had a good tune to begin with...why did you change the jets? I would put it back to the way it was, since all you had was a problem with the diaphram.

I did not change the jets. I have a new 46 pilot and 185 main jet but I did not install them. The 48 pilot jet and 180 main jet that are in it now were put in by a previous owner. I assume this was when the Stage 1 was installed. I cleaned it, put a rebuild kit in it and replaced the aftermarket needle with the OEM 1200 Sporty part.

I got the bike with 2-into-1 pipes and it had decel popping and blowback that I was unable to tune out. I had the dealer put it on a dyno and try to tune it and they were able to get it minimized but not eliminated and said I would need to change the pipes and retune or live with it. The popping and sneezing was annoying but I could live with it...and it sure was zippy on the low and mid ranges. I only replaced them with the Samsons because I got a real good deal on the Samsons and the original muffler was looking pretty ratty, and I could not find a replacement or identify the manufacturer. I was able to tune out the decel popping and blowback with the Samsons but I am not all that pleased with the loss of performance from the new Samsons. I would put the original 2-into-1 pipes back on in a heartbeat and try to retune it again if I could find a new slip-on muffler. I will post a photo of the unknown pipes and maybe someone here will know what they are.

Ok...misunderstood your post. you changed the needle...not the jets. You stated that

Original problem: Bike was running great until I started smelling fuel and noticed slightly sluggish acceleration. I found fuel leaking from the accelerator pump diaphragm when I checked it out. I removed, disassembled, and cleaned the carb, blew it out with shop air, and installed a basic CVP rebuild kit. I also replaced the aftermarket jet needle that was in it with a HD part.
...

So I guess my modified question would be... Why did you change the needle?

I didn't like the aftermarket clip and washer setup. Seemed a little cheesy to me...

Also, I do not think these Samsons will stay on too much longer. I like the sound, but like I mentioned before, I am really disappointed with the loss of performance I ended up with when I changed over from the 2-into-1 pipes...I will go back to a 2-into-1 setup when I decide what to go with and I am hoping that the HD needle will work better than the aftermarket one.

Default Update...

I pulled out the mixture adjust screw and installed the CVP EZ-Just screw and packing kit. When I pulled the old setup out, I had to work at getting the o-ring out and found out the o-ring was flat and deformed. I set the initial adjustment at 2 1/2 turns and had to take it out another half turn and readjust the idle. I am definitely seeing a response from adjusting the mixture which I did not have before. I am going to ride it to work tomorrow morning and see where I am at. I still may have to pull it and shim the needle, but it seems like I am making progress with this bitch.

Running a lot better but I am still not satisfied. Going to pull it today and go back through it...something is not right.

Hey Skinman, Google Joe Minton he has good info on tuning the carb on these Harley's. Just a thought and an interesting read.
