Default Lights Fuse Keeps blowing

Hello All,
I am rather new to the forum so please be patient with me.

I have a 2006 HD Electra glide, 31000 miles.

I have a fuse that pops intermittently. The Fuse is a 15 amp that is for the lights. Sometimes I can ride for days without it blowing. But lately as soon as I turn on the ignition switch it pops. I have checked all the bulbs and the wiring as much as my mechanical skills allow the bulbs were good except the rear fender marker light. I lose my brake lights, marker lights, turn signals, but not my hazards or headlight.

I have even disconnected the connection harness under the seat that connects the main harness to the back. The fuse still pops so I'm assuming that the short is somewhere in the front but I don't know where to start.

Any Ideas?

Thank you,

Scott E Dawg

ScottE, welcome to the HD forums!

Not meant to discourage you but, what you describe can be a frustrating task to locate. Your good to have isolated to the front. It sounds like a definite wire pinched or hot wire coating chafe, (possibly). Visual is a good first strategy then to trouble spots that may be hidden under a protective outer plastic jacket. Near the neck and under the gas tank first come to mind. Another area at times the culprit is the hadlebar switch housings. Mods made there at times can be a problem with the close quarter connections for wiring to switches in those housings. That's a start.... Someone else may chime in with some other ideas.

Good luck.

Scott, you either have to get down and dirty with a multimeter, or find someone who already knows how to use one. A local indy should be able to identify your problem pdq. If you are feeling stuck, don't mess around, find someone who can help you out!

I have the same problem on my 06 Electra Glide. I have all bulbs out and have unplugged rear Tour Pac and lights. I put in new fuse and turn Ign. on and it blows the fuse. It started about 3 years ago blowing every couple months but now cant put one in without blowing. Must be from the seat forward. Would appreciate any help. Thanks Willie Conner

Just a long shot but, any recent mods like possibly chrome switch housings?? Tight fitting wire connections there many times will result in a dead short caused by a hot wire grounding to a housing.

Headlamp is not powered by the Lights fuse.

OP: do you have a factory service manual?

You will need to start disconnecting electrical connectors to track down the short, a service manual will tell you where the specific connectors are located.

Review wire loom at the neck.
Turn bars full left and turn ON..look at fuse
Then full right.
Then straight.
Something is grounding and that area gets some movement
