Starter Button problem?
My starter button engages the starter about half of the time, doesn't seem to have any particular pattern just works or not when if feels like it. When it does work the starter works well infact I believe it is fairly new. The bike is a recently acquired 1975 FLH and I was wondering if the switch is rebuild-able or any other ideas to look at,,,.all connections are tight on the external hardware, this can happen cold or after a ride so battery shouldn't be the problem.
At this point you don`t know if it is the starter switch (starter button).
Don`t start guessing and buying parts, you need to do a little housekeeping on the electrical wiring first...
The first thing to do is clean all electrical connections (get a can of electrical contact cleaner and a piece of scotchbrite).
Battery cables (both ends of each cable), all connections at the starter and starter solenoid, all connections at starter relay.
Since the bike is 45 years old, it is likely that at least some of the wiring on the bike is not original.
The relay may be a small cube relay (Bosch/Tyco type) or a larger unit that looks like a solenoid (look under the battery box).
Disconnect the negative battery cable before you do anything else.
