Default 09 FLSTC cam chest mods (96ci)

Was going to order parts and tool tomorrow for a diy project over the holidays. If anyone has suggestions/tips/tricks or knows where to get cheaper parts I sure would appreciate it. Be my first cam swap. Will be doing this on 2009 FLSTC 96ci, Stage 1 air intake and V&H Big Shot Staggered exhaust with quiet baffles. 18,000 miles on bike

Doing this because of cam noise and concerns of failing cam tensioners along with getting a nice performance boost. I know it is past the 2006 and prior builds with the tensioner issues but still have concerns.

JMHO but see no need for the Zippers dual piston tensioners and am betting that when you see yours, they will still be within service limits. If not, replace with OEM tensioners. Suggest that you consider the SE Billet cam plate/pump upgrade (PN 25282-11); about $365 from an online HD discount dealer. I have never been a fan of running cams in the OEM cam plate because the outer cam journals ride in the parent material of the plate; no bushing or bearing. I know, some run them but I do not; have seen premature wear in the OEM cam plate with performance cams. For the cost of the Zippers tensioners and the oil pump plus $50, you have a more robust cam chest IMHO.

No need for the HL2T travel limited lifters; tricky to adjust and just not necessary for your plan. A set of S&S standards will serve you well. Don't know what S&S pushrods you are getting but make sure you are getting pushrods that you can adjust easily with the stock tubes. The SE set (PN 18404-08) includes pushrods, tubes, clips and O-rings and might be worth a look.

If you don't have the service manual for your bike, get it and read it before you start. Pay attention to oil pump alignment when reassembling. You did not include upgraded inner cam bearings in you parts list but did included the tool so you are planning on replacing the OEM inner cam bearings. The SE 24018-10 bearings are good replacements. Might as well replace the exhaust port gaskets as well.

You did not include upgraded inner cam bearings in you parts list but did included the tool so you are planning on replacing the OEM inner cam bearings. The SE 24018-10 bearings are good replacements.

Andrews 48 would be at near same/same.
Those hover at 90 hp 100 ft/lbs.

Yea, don't go with the HL2T lifters. They decrease the amount of adjustment meant for expansion and keeping things quiet...regular S&S lifters work great set at .140" preload...

And as a matter of fact, the S&S standard lifter will be just fine, and save money at the same time.

I took your advice. Here is what I ordered. Will all be here the 24th. Already have it apart replacing main gear bearing so shouldn't be too much to get it in. Thanks again

Done!

Main gear bearing was a pain in the *** but cams, rods and lifters were smooth. Took it for a test run with a PC5 map I found on internet that was as close as I could find to my setup and it runs good. Cold as **** in San Antonio tonight so didn't go too long. Can't wait to get it tuned and get some warm weather.

The main gear bearing probably wouldn't have been such a pain had I bought the tool for it but at $350 it's too much. Instead I made a couple trips to Lowes and Harbor Freight and played McGyver for a 3rd of the tool cost.
