Unhappy Noise After Cam Change

Hi all!

Probably that the question already exist on the forum, but my problem is quiet special and different...

On an EVO, I just have changed a camshaft for an Andrews EV23. The tappets have been changed at the same time (Feuling HP+)
Everything looks fine and the bike rides great! But I have a very strange noise behavior:

- First of all, it's whining a lot. And this according to the amount of throttle. Usually, it's because of a too SMALL backlash with the pinion gear.
To avoid that, I have change my stock red gear for a green one. I still have the noise, but a little bit less.
It sounds like an old 2t Kawasaki or a Trimuph Speed Triple if you know what I mean.

- Secondly, I have a very present ticking noise when the engine is hot. Usually, it's because of a too BIG backlash with the pinion gear.

I am at a totally lost here... I have changed few EVO camshaft in the last few month and it's the first time that I have both symptom at the same time.

So guys, what do you advise?
Should I install adjustable pushrod? I can be avoid the ticking problem. I think about Andrews purple EZ
Should I install another cam? I think about V Thunder 3010
Should I go downgrade to stock?

FYI: I have changed the breather for an S&S reed valve (without gear). Both noise come from the bottom end - valve train; Not from the top end.
I have also changed the cam bearing. Twice.

In advance, thank you for sour support!
Xavier

(sorry for my English- I'm from French part of Switzerland)

Did you use your old gear?
Or the gear that cam on the cam-if you did , was it measured?
If not it is too bog and that is your noise.
Next- Puch rods will not cause a whining noise.
Just the ticking
Lifter bores?
Worn lifter bores will not compensate for new lifters or oil pressure
.They should be measured or at least an experienced "feel".
If they just drip through the bores ya gots problems .
Hope this get you started.

Hi King,

Thanks for your message!

First of all, I have keep the stock red pinion gear. The measurement was correct according to the manual. The whining was quiet high.
Then, I have installed a Revtech green pinion. It measures less than the red one. The whining is less than with the red, but still present at any temperature.

Basically, as a French speaking guy, I'm not sure if "whining" is the correct word. It's more like a fan noise, like wiiiiin wiiiiiin according to the throttle...
Later today, I'll make a video to show you the noise.

Regarding the ticking, it's present when the engine is high temperature and with the red and the green pinion as well.
So my idea is to install adjustable pushrod. It should help to get the correct bore right?

Thanks

Did you measure the cam gear? with the pins?
Wrong push rod lengths will cause the tap tap sound, nothing to do with lifter bore.

Yes, sure. I used the 0.108 pins. The Andrews cam measures a little bit more than the stock cam gear.
I don't remember the size, it's written on a paper ;-)

Sorry, I didn't understood all your meaning about the lifter bore. You mean if the tappets "moves" when in place?
No, they don't move. It looks that they are perfect. But I didn't measure. just using my hand.

The lifter blocks that the lifter goes up and dwn in.
They do wear out.

Are you sure the ticking is from the cam? Could be coming from the top end, common problem.

Yes, I'm sure that it comes from the bottom end. Top end is really quiet.
Thanks :-)

I made a video. We can clearly listen to the ticking and also the whining.
Thanks :-)

cannot say for your machine but i have heard this noise before and it was linked to cam alignment. back-lash is important but so is axial alignment. it sounds to me like gear whine, louder with speed.
