Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
read them a few times and watch the YouTube videos. also, make sure you install the inserts as stated in the directions..john actually sends out 5 instead of 4 so you can make 1 mistake as I did and probably many more.

I'm getting a service jack/lift this weekend so that I can remove the plugs and spin the rear tire. I could never use a "flat bottom" lift with any of my metric sport bikes.
On one of the videos it looks like someone is turning over the engine with a wrench at the crank....

Don't turn the engine over off the end of the crank!!!! Harleys have crank end shafts that are made like cooked pasta. Just spin the engine from the rear wheel. It is a super easy job. Don't make it any harder than it needs to be.... The mod your about to do is one of the best out there to correct HD's sorry engineering.
Prior to opening the engine, the OP may want to double check for things such as a loose heat shield, tank mounting hardware, etc.
If the brass inserts do not cure it, then as djl has mentioned, a lifter could be the culprit and if that is the case, my more would be on the f/exhaust.
Scott
weird...as this is exactly where my failed lifter was.
I'm pretty sure it's not a lifter simply because the engine is silent when it starts up cold.
The ticking gets noticable when the engine gets warm.
A leaking down lifter would be just the opposite.
