Default Fuel Controller?

Hello hdforums. Virgin post here but have been learning from the site awhile.

I have a '13 FLHX with the 103. Full rinehart exhaust true dual.

I am planning on replacing the cams with the se255s and i have a cam install kit and new cam timing tensioners etc...and new rollers and adjustable push rods. Also I am replacing the air filter with the arlen ness inverted series air filter.

My question is, all of that being said should I also upgrade my fuel controller? I do have a power commander still in the box, not sure if that helps or not when it comes to whether or not to do this.

A canned map will probably work "ok", but an actually dyno tune would be the best, for you, and the bike.
Most times, there is a fairly significant difference.

So you recommend a dyno/tune and not a fuel controller upgrade. Thanks for the advice! A dyno would definitely be fun I will look into that.

I had a '13 FLTRX 103 with Rinehart Classic Tru Duals & 4" mufflers, hi-flow air, and a Thundermax tuner. Wanted to do cams. Talked with my HD certified indy. In his opinion and also the opinion of just about everything I have read, there is a large selection of very good aftermarket cams available today and purchasing HD cams is just about "last choice" on what I have found. I went with what my indy recommended after careful consideration--S & S cams, I think S & S e-z start 151 is what he put in. Improves low and mid range torque, has a really nice lope in the idle. When I picked up my bike after he put the cams in and tweaked the Thundermax tuner, etc. he had a big grin on his face and said "Joe, you're gonna love the throttle response". And he was right !!! So, maybe I should feel a bit remorseful for not using HD cams that are EPA compliant. But I don't feel the least bit bad about adding a bit more pollution to the atmosphere LOL.

I can't really speak to the issue of your question about the capabilities of your current tuner, but I hope you rethink your decision on what cams to put in.

Man that sounds like it was alot of fun! Glad the path you took worked out for you and your bike. When it comes to cams everybody has their own dog and pony show about this one or that one etc...I did some research and found a really good set of the 255's on this forum and got them at a great price. I intend to throw them in and get a professional tune and see where that gets me. If it turns out that its not what I expect or I'm unhappy then I will definitely look into other options. Though there are dozens of threads on here with satisfied 255 owners. If it gives me the low/mid range boost I'm looking for then I'll be happy.
