Just had my bike built with a totally new top end . It’s an S&S 110 with the S&S heads . Running S&S 585 cams also . And the bike runs strong . It’s been broken in and dyno tuned . I was cruising the interstate at around 3000 rpms and maybe back down to 26 . Was going for ten maybe 15 minutes and got home and noticed a slight tick . So I checked the oil and the oil level was higher than I’ve ever seen it . Had a new filter and oil , so I changed it and readjusted the level . The Tick went away .. I never did invest in a high volume oil pump and I gues I’m asking if possibly the oil pump isn’t doing the job ? Or maybe a weak lifter ? I don’t understand why the oil seemed so high in the tank with the ticking also ? I’m getting ready to go on a trip on 3 or 4 hour ride and don’t want any problems .. Any suggestions and opinions would be appreciated .. Any information would be helpful . thank y’all

 

I doubt that the tick and the oil level are related. What bike?

 

Don’t sweat it for now. If the tick grows louder, start sweating

 

it’s an 07 Night Train Softail..

 

Higher than normal oil levels are common in softails. Oil from the tank can drain past the "back flow" valve into the crank case sump. Owner checks oil and sees low level and adds oil. Fires up the bike and all the drained oil in the sump flows back to the tank. Owner checks oil again and see over full; happens all the time. Many times the oil ends up betting blown out through the air cleaner and all over that side of the bike.

To correct the problem, fire up the bike and let the motor idle for a few minutes. This will circulate the oil and fill up the tank. Check oil and if the level is high, use a turkey baster to pull oil out down to full or just below full. If oil is low, add enough to bring level to full or just below. Never check oil level on a softail cold; always hot.

As for the tick, it could be a variety of things but as Dave says, don't worry about it, the motor is not going to blow up. Get the oil level right and take your 300-400 mile ride and enjoy it.
