Ive got 5 thou runout measured at the pinion shaft on my somewhat built up 2017 Twin Cam. I know Harleys acceptable is .012 (which is insane). Im thinking while 5 thou isnt bad, its not good. And for longevitys sake (Im never selling this bike) Im wondering if I should bite the bullet and send the short block out to dark horse for rebuild/upgrades ($1700 and a painful month and a half).
If I left the top end where it is (see my sig for all the stuff Ive done) would you just leave it alone and live with the .005 runout?
Don't think it's necessary at this time... but it's your wallet..
Well I sure dont want to waste money, but I also want to keep this bike in good shape. So if you think .005 is ok for the long term, great. Ill leave it alone. But if Ill be looking at grinding up my cam plate bushings and oil pumps over time, thats not something Id like to set.

Well, lol, itll also probably run on one cylinder, but thats not something you would want to leave it as, right?
I have run gear driven cams at .0045" with no issues; not intentionally though. When I installed the gears, runout was .0025" but, over time, it grew to .0045". I ran it that way for about 15K miles but got the bug for a rebuild for more power. Had Darkhorse o their thing on the crank for the rebuild.
I`ll bet you didn`t get much forward movement though...
Actually I was a mile and a half from home and drove it 40 mph.. I was pretty drunk.. The next morning I drove it down to my shop 5.5 miles.. Made it no problem, just really loud hammering every time a cylinder would fire.....
