Default 1996 HD fatboy running issue

So I have a 1996 fatboy, no issues with the bike before starting work. I recently put handle bars on the bike. I did all the work, I took the tanks off and extended the wires. I ran them through the new bars and the sodered the wires together, same with the tachometer. Once finished I started the bike, the bike ran as normal, no issues. When I took the bike for a test drive down the road it drove fine uptill I went to a high rpm to shift in the next gear. The bike then back fired and the tachometer flung up to a high rpm and then the bike shut off. I haven't got the bike to stop doing that. Iv rechecked all the wires, checked the grounds, tested the coil and swapped it for a new and a higher resistant one, changed spark plugs, i changed my ignition switch. Still no luck, I was wondering if someone has had this problem or knows where to go from here. My next idea is changing out the ignition sensor, that's behind the timming cover. Thanks for the help, I have a video but this site won't let me upload it.

It was fine before the work. It’s bad after the work. Obviously, It’s something that was done during the work. Probably a bare wire inside of the bars—easy to do when pulling the wires through.

So is the bike currently running at all or is it totally dead? If it's totally dead I would suspect the cam position sensor down in the camshaft nose cone. Take the covers off and take a picture and post them up..

The bike is running fine. No issues at idle. Only when you get to 3-4 rpm, it backfires then tries to turn off.

Another vote for pulling the timing cover and you'll likely see brown goo... That year had the tip-over sensing timing sensor known for failure and since discontinued by HD.

Don't let my 1996 FB read that. It is still issue free after 27 years.

Iv took the cover off and the module is slightly melted, but isn't causing a puddle or drip. It's still probably worth a try though. Thanks for your thoughts

Hate to spend your money on my advice but with an intermittent cutout like yours, that's the 2nd place to look. You've already swapped the coil. BTW, whatever module you run, it should be 3 ohm coil so if you put a 5 ohm on, probably best to go back to what you had when you get it sorted out.

That exact sensor with tip-over feature is n/a but any Evo cam sensor will work. Only difference is wire color (stripe), length and connector pins. Some of the other guys have the part number memorized and might chime in.

Good luck.

Ride it just fine. It has always been or 2 or 3 in the bike room. But the one that always stays.
Wife and I had so much fun on it neither of us would let it go.
