So I tore down the cylinders to reseal the top end and have figured out that the rocker gaskets are very picky about how they are installed as I've already had to redo the front.

I've noticed that I had an intermittent spray of oil off to the side of the Rocker on the ground which will be fixed with new gaskets but more importantly I've noticed drops of oil on top of the transmission cover. Would this be because my Rocker gaskets were trashed due to my crappy install or has the gasket between the Rocker and Head failed? It's hard for me to tell, the gasket in the left hand side of the Rocker was proud and I could see it but this leak is tough to tell where exactly it's coming from.

 

Before you put new gaskets in, check the individual rocker box covers for warpage. Most common is the center one to warp. Place each one on a sheet of plate glass (or other known flat surface) and see if they wobble. It doesn't take much for them to leak, and no matter how many times you re-gasket them: They'll leak (long painful story).

 

I checked both of them. Middle or "D" ring checked good. Top was slightly warped.

 

If your rocker boxes are from a 1989 model year bike, throw them straight into the scrap barrel.

 

Try using cork gaskets with a thin film of gasket maker on each side. Make sure gasket stays in the groove prior to torqueing.

 

Thanks all. I installed HD gaskets which fit perfectly unlike the Cometics I originally installed. So far no leaks.

 

If you left that warped top box in then it will seep.
The only cure for that is a new top piece.

 

(again, I've got a real horror story about leaking rockerboxes...)

The EVO oil system 'collects' a lot of oil in the rockerboxes at highway speeds. Take your bike out on the interstate, or somewhere that you can run at 65+ mph for 20-30 minutes. Any leaks will show up.
