The small end of the 1" axle is less than 3/4"....I have researched this as several people on here have already done it and also have measured both the 1" and 3/4" axle and it should work just fine. Just needs to be turned down from the shoulder of the big end out to the taper on the small end.

 

I have Brembo 4-piston calipers mounted on 2007 lowers/sliders, and the 11.8" (300 mm) discs fit/work perfectly. I milled the caliper mounts to fit my front end / wheel combination, but absolutely no change to position in relation to caliper/disc.

 

Cool. I did not know that. It sounded like a FUBAR/ TARFU situation getting ready to happen. Or at least some upgraded wheels as well.

 

I have the wheels off of the 05 Road King. My plan is to swap out tubes, lowers, axles and wheel. My question is what else do I need to buy to bolt all of this together? Do I just need calipers and rotors for this swap? Also, will my mechanical speedometer work with this set up?

 

Calipers, yes. not sure about the rotors but I think the ones form your 97 will work unless you just want new ones.

Mechanical Speedometer, NO. This is the reason I am keeping my wheel and having the 1" axle turned down. Easiest way that I can come up with to keep the speedometer working. If you really want to swap wheels you could have a 1" axle turned to 3/4 and from what i have read use 3/4 bearings in the newer wheel.

 

Take a look at my snowball thread and see if that helps.. I changed to '10 wheels when I did mine. I've also retained the speedo, but its a work in progress after 20k mi. I've broken the speedo drive 2x, but thin I have the fix.. I'll be updating it soon. Its all do-able.

 

I did this except I used my original 97 wheel.
I was going to have the 1" axle turned down as someone here mentioned.
My machinist didn't want to, and talked me out of that.
Instead we made split bushings, and they work fine.

The 4 piston brakes are well worth the upgrade imo, and not a difficult job either.

 

Are you doing front and rear wheel swop?

You'll need new callipers and matching disk rotors. The old disks won't fit on the new wheel, or the new callipers. You can keep your old fork legs though.

Yours is a Classic, hence the speedo drive? Are you going to alloy or sticking with wire wheels? I don't know these. It looks like it acts as a spacer too, yes?
