Default oil filter mount

I have an '88 FLTCH ULTRA the oil filter mount is on the bottom of the tranny. The problem is that it is loose. I don't have a parts manual for the bike yet but am I wrong in guessing the bolts to hold it go through the tranny case and can only be tightened from inside the case?

No, it is tightened from on top. Some have been able to get to the bolt without major disassembly. Some have reported the bolt to be left hand thread, some right hand.

Unfortunately I can't see the pic you posted right now, but you say the bolts go through the entire tranny?

I didn't post any pictures. No, the bolts don't go through the whole transmission. You'll just have to get in there and look. I think some have got there by taking the seat off. The bolt is under the starter.

The bolt in question goes through the web between the swingarm axle pivot and the rear of the trans. It is accessible from above. Mine has done the same, so I actually removed the bolt and cleaned everything up (it was pretty filthy under there), before tightening things back up.

Actually...I use RED Locktite on that bolt as its a PITA when it comes loose (it one of about three that warrant its use). You can get to it easy enough by just pull the starter motor.

Well I finally got to the bolt and PITA is an understatement after pulling the starter I had to use my impact driver to fully remove the mounting bolt. The webbing was packed with dirt and gravel long story short got the oil lines sealed up and everything tightened up and secured with locktite. Thanks everybody for pointing me in the right direction

Curious if it had right or left hand threads? I need to tighten mine up as well.

And was removing the starter a necessity?

It's a conventional thread, not lefthand.
