Default Running lights

1997 FLHTC

Brake light is staying lit. I had some sticking with front brake lever switch,I got that fixed and I came in this morning and brake light is stuck on. Pulled it back apart and when I push the lever switch in brake light goes off. If I hold front switch in and hit pedal brake it works as it should. Also should rear turn signals on the bar, should they be lit with running lights? They are not but signals work. Any help?

Only signals in the rear- no running lights if you are using the stock lighting setup.

Brake lever mount (perch) musr be aligned in an exact position to depress switch and turn brake light OFF. Just a little either up or down on perch, will allow switch to extend and turn ON brake light. The brake switch in the housing may Be adjustable if you take housing apart, but wires are small and might be brittle with age. Other option, take brake lever off and make a shim and attach to brake lever at switch contact point. Use a small piece of stock about .040 thick and attach with Epoxy. Should last forever!

I fought mine off and on for a couple months.

This was the permanent fix

Just signals in the back

Not sure if this is it but I went through this a few weeks back when I swapped my bars. Look inside the switch where the lever hits the switch. Make sure the switch isn't pushed slightly backwards towards the rear of the bike. With a tiny screwdriver pull the front lever then from underneath push the switch button forward to make sure it's fully forward. It does move and it takes very little effort to dislodge it.

There is a note in the SM that mentions using something to depress the switch while putting the lever back in. I used a piece of cardboard cut down to go in there.

I recall a similar recommendation when working on the switches of my 2011 Sporty a few weeks ago! Different in appearance, but the same in principle.

Yes you need something to keep the lever depressed or when you reinstall it the lever doesn't clear the button and can push it in and dislodge it
