Default Fuel Level woes

1996 Dyna FXD
fuel level gauge pegs out 99% of the time the key is on but will briefly read correctly every once in a great while.
I've tried to purchase a replacement from/though Harley Davidson and have been told that the part is obsolete and no longer available.
I am seeking help from my community of Harley riders that may have or had the same issue.
