I'm going to dig through the wiring diagrams tonight, but off the top of my head, I don't see how the module is involved in the brake lights. Am I wrong on that?
Ooohhh...this might be something.
I didn't think this was related (and therefore didn't mention it), but the bike has gotten a bit sketchy about starting over the last few months. The symptoms are that once in a while (say, every five starts) it will hesitate for a half a second before turning over. Maybe one time in ten, it won't turn over at all unless I release the starter button. It always fires right up on the second hit.
Both of those seem to be worse when it's good and hot.
Think that could be related?
IIRC your starter relay utilizes the center pin to kill the power to the rest of the bike when starting.
If I disconnect the relay, I get exactly the same symptoms as when the dash goes out.
Went ahead and cleaned the contacts really well. Reconnected the relay and went for a short test ride.
So far, so good. I'll give it a day or two to see if the problem returns (in which case I'll replace the relay), but at the moment it looks good to go.
Yes. Just discovered that the brake lights and turn signals are non-op when this happens
ThC and I were on the phone shooting the bull earlier. Playing with my bike on accessory, the turn signals worked , the back light on the speedo was on (others off) and the hazard flashers would work. No brake lights tho.
And the fuel and volt meter didn't register anything. (no needle movement)
Old thread, I know and I don't care. Not starting a new thread for a couple questions. The housing that holds this row of breakers behind the headlight, I will find a ground wire coming out of what the back side of it? While I'm there I want to change all them breakers, are they all 20 amp? I did the main breaker down near the battery with a 50 amp. Also have a '90 Electra Glide. Plus I'll be checking and looking for the ground Dr. Hess mentioned.. Thanks!
