Default Starter cover

Have a loose right side starter cover. Bolt tightens just fine. Bracket it threads into is loose. Do I need to pull oil tank to get this cover off to see problem, or is there a trick to removing it? Butts right up against oil tank. '98 Ultra.

Oil spout comes off with 4 bolts..you will need a new gasket...will probably lose some oil..

You might not need to pull anything out of the way to get that starter cover off except for the one screw holding it in place. I can get the cover off my 98 RKC that way. However; it is a pain in the *** to get out. I have to rotate and squirrel mine around until I finally get it out. Plan on cussing for several minutes while you do it. Once out, clean and wax it real good before putting it back on so you won't have to do it again anytime soon. I also put a flat and lock washer on mine to keep it tight and added a drop of blue locktite because it's a Harley.

Thanks, Tom for the reply and link. Just ordered gasket.

Thanks, Carl . Will try again to squirrel it off one more time. Already done the cussin' .

Don't think it will come out because the bracket behind is too loose and floppy...but I'll try. Gonna do red loctite on bracket nuts with lockwashers and blue on screw with lockwasher. As I work on things I am replacing hardware with stainless steel fasteners also. Appreciate everyone's input. Ken

I wouldn't go red on those brackets. Someday that starter will need to be replaced and the new one won't come with the brackets. Blue will work fine and will keep them tight.

You might want to pickup one of those push buttons that go on the starter. Those are cheap and really come in handy when you really need it. Especially when the click click happens....

What I THINK was a starter grind on a throttled-only cranking with the bad cam position sensor has not happened once since replacing the sensor. Just don't know how a bad cps would cause the grinding noise, if in fact it was a starter noise. Have done numerous rides and off-on test starts both hot and cold and not one problem. Scary noise, though..
sounded like motor was about to seize or fly apart.
