My father bought a FXRD new in 1986 and it was his pride and joy for 15 yrs. I bought it from him in the early 2000s. I really enjoyed it and took some amazing trips. I rode it from Chicago to the Pacific in the late 80s, Sturgis in 1998 (I did my 1k mile day on the way back) and Harley's 100th was amazing!.
Flash forward, our 2 sons who love dirt riding are now going to engineering school. Even splitting tuition in half is expensive. Unfortunately, I have not been able to do much street riding and I need to free up some cash so it is time to let my FXRD go to a new home. The bike is in very good condition. It has 39k miles on it and it is all stock including the original exhaust system. Cons- the fork legs and some other aluminum could be polished, there are some nicks and scratches from 34 yrs of use but overall it is a very clean bike that runs and rides great. My father met Willie G Davidson at a bike meet and he signed the inside of the top box.
Since the FXRD is pretty rare (limited edition, 1986 only), I am having a difficult time determining a fair price. I am also trying to figure out where to post it. The Forum marketplace classified, Cycle Trader and ebay are pretty easy to get good coverage, but I am not sure if there are any other good places I should try.
Thank you and I would really appreciate any input.
She is a beauty... Hope my Youngest don't see it... sometimes price is no Object to him...LOL
BTW I generally use NADA because Dealers and Banks do...
That Bike is priced rather "Steep"!!!!!
I'm riding a 1985 FXRS that I purchased new in '85. My FXRS and I have shared 300,000 mi of highways together. When I looked at this post...my FIRST impulse was to contact the OP and try to buy this bike....It's a real gem. NO question. When I bought my FXRS, I did a test ride on an FXRD. It was fabulous, but I decided "I wasn't old enough" to need all that. That was 35 yrs ago, and (praise God..) I've lived long enough to be older...and appreciate the RD more.
I'm looking at this bike...wanting to own it...THEN reality sets in...PARTS...SERVICE.
Pretty much everything on this bike is "Obsolete". When/If you find parts, they can be STUPID expensive, or in some cases I've run into over the years...a shop will have "one" of an item, but won't sell it out of their area..or you find one overseas and they won't ship to the U.S. (Those are real experiences I've had trying to source original HD parts for my bike).
NO dealer will work on this bike so you either need to have a good local shop, or be able to do it all yourself.
I hope this bike goes to someone who will enjoy it, RIDE IT A LOT...and not put it in the garage as some kind of "collectors item".
Best wishes to the op on the sale..I'll be interested in what the asking price is...well, just because. Who knows..??
Yeah, I have an '85 S as well, and I'm trying to figure out how to swing buying an extra 'parts bike' that's all there but not together for when I inevitably need something. If I can get essentially a spare bike for cheap enough, I'm thinking it's worth it.
OP, sweet bike. Are you SURE you need to sell it??? I haven't sold many bikes (hence my current small collection), but the ones I have sold I wish I hadn't.
