Default starting issue

I have a 1990 softail. the problem is when I hit the start button there is one LOUD click but nothing turns as if the starter was locked up. I can loosen the mounting bolts and it will start. It seems like something is in a bind maybe. any ideas? Thanks

Start with putting a full charge on the battery, then take it to AutoZone to have it load tested. If it fails, it's new battery time. While you are at it, clean the battery cables and starter wiring.

Have a 2011 ultra limited 9 out of 10 times it cranks just fine. Battery is charged. No loose wires. Once and awhile I put ignition switch to on. Push start and not a sound. Turn to off and back to on voila cranks right back up. Wtf! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Ty

You might have better luck in the touring forum as you have wandered into the EVO forum.
Your bike is 12 years newer than the newest EVO bagger so not much of what will fix our bikes will apply to your bike.

I thought it was just me. 95 Heritage Softail Classic. Same thing. Battery is always on tender, dealership checked battery, no issues. Always happens after sitting for week. If I get her started and go for a ride and stop, she turns right over. I think I found the solution the other day. Bike just clicked, and I moved some wires behind the oill tank that looks to be conneted to some type of small realy block. Turned over, and went for my ride. Going to clean and tighten connections and see if that fixes the issue.

A simpler way to fix your issue is to run a 20 amp fused wire from your positive battery post to pin 30 on your starter relay.

If you have a good battery that has been load tested, then I would look at your solenoid contacts.

Or you could wire it like the early Softails, a wire (14awg) from the main breaker (silver stud) to pin 30 on starter relay. That #14 wire will be protected by the main breaker.

Here`s a pic of the `89 configuration:
