Default Oil Warning Light

Rode the bike to work today and ran fine on the way in, Right before work got out we had a torrential rain. About a mile into my ride I noticed the oil light was on but very dim. It didnt seem to change being higher in the revs or lower. Plenty of oil in the tank, Light comes on full blast when bike is turned off. I'm hoping that it's just something got wet and needs to be dried out. I've never even had the light flicker while running before today.

Thanks in advance.

First thing I would do is check for a bad sending unit. Start with the easy stuff

Let it dry out really well and then see what's what.

99 FLSTF. Carbed bike, Recent oil change and first time I've ever seen the light on while running, If I start it light goes to dim, when I turn it off light goes full force which is very bright after about 2 seconds of shutting down. pretty much indicates the sender is working and some moisture is causing a light issue. Just wanted to make sure I was on the right path

The circuit for the oil pressure light uses the sending unit as ground.

When pressure is high enough, the switch opens, breaking the circuit.

If the light comes on when it shouldn`t, it could be a bad switch, or a wire chafing and grounding.

The wire is Green with Yellow stripe on the `99.

Am I correct in assuming it is either on or off? IE it doesnt come on dim for sort of low pressure? The dim part is what got me, Leads me to believe there some moisture causing a short near the bulb or something. Plan to check it in the AM after sitting in the garage all night, Then I can start chasing the problem if it's wiring related.

update: went to pull the cap off the switch and the plastic crumbled in my hand, guessing this was my issue, new one ordered and will be back up in a running in after the weekend, First daughter(after two sons) is scheduled to be born on Fri morning so the bike can wait until all are home safe and sound.

FWIW, and with your family obligations it may not matter, but you can run it without the switch.
