I just picked one up. It runs good I am the second owner. It was brothers bike since it was new. Its a bit rough but did run well enough to ride from Arkansas to Wisconsin. So here is my big question. Is it worth a rebuild? The only thing that has ever been done to it is the paint went from white to black. Otherwise 100 percent original. Only 34000 miles are on it. What do you all think. Save or unload?

34,000 mi. is nothing. Given that it's an old bike that you KNOW the history of, and it's still in original condition ( less paint..) I wouldn't hesitate to keep it on the road myself, but then I'm still riding the 1985 FXRS I bought new in '85. Simply haven't found a bike I would rather be riding. One thing you will have to be aware of is that factory parts for that bike are getting real difficult to find.

 

At 34,000 miles it shouldn’t need a rebuild, a refresh maybe. It could very well be leaking oil around the rocker boxes and or the cylinder base gaskets. If so, re-gasket the top end and ride it.

 

If you like it, keep it. If you don’t, sell it.

 

KEEP IT, many of my friends with twin cams and Milwaukee 8's, are having problems with the new large displacement engines, excessive heat and other things, they are saying the way to go is sticking with the good old 80 inch

 

I agree with your friends. That said, with the recent uptick in the popularity of the Evo era bikes, I think we can expect to see aftermarket companies start to come up with parts that are currently more difficult to find for them.
