Default Carbi Question.

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if 27480-97 carbi off a 1200c Sporster will work on a mid 80's 80ci Evo?

Wanting to change out the butterfly style to the CV

I realize I will need to re-jet but is anything else different on the carbi?

I have a manifold from an early 90's big twin but am having trouble locating a carb off the same so wondering if fitting the sporty one is relatively straight forward.

Thanks Steve.

Yes, it will work just fine. All the parts are identical other than sizing of the factory installed jets and jet needle - with two exceptions. The cable bracket is at a slightly different angle and the fuel inlet is installed almost straight up, rather than angled slightly toward the choke cable.

I've never tried a Sporty bracket on a BT, so can't speak to whether it work but the fuel inlet probably won't be an issue. You will need different cables switching from a butterfly. The cable housing lengths are different. Also, the intake manifold is different on a 1340 vs the Sportster, manifold flanges are the same.

I might be able to offer more info if I knew what bike you're working with. You will get much better fuel mileage and have better power with the CV over a the stock butterfly.

Thanks for the reply.

It will be going onto 85 Wide Glide, EV3 cams, and higher compression pistons.

It did have an Andrews flowmaster and S&S manifold on it but this carbi has been damaged.

The cables will need to be for a post '89 (90-up) because of the difference of the cable-to-housing length between the butterfly and CV, so you'll have to do some research. 56343-90 and 56342-90 should work, but measure your current cables and reference with replacements for the mentioned numbers. Most all aftermarket listings will have both length and OEM number listed. Of course if the handlebars are custom, that's another variable.

With your setup, 45 (maybe) or 48 low jet, 185 main jet would be where I'd start. Just have to look at the needle to make a guess on that. This assuming the carb is stock and doesn't have aftermarket so-called "performance" mods already. Many used carbs have already been modified, but that's another chapter.

With the higher mounted tank, you might be be OK with the Sporty cable bracket. Just "dry fit" you current cables to get an idea before ordering cables or searching for the other style bracket. The first pic is Sportster, the second BT so you can see the difference where the Sporty is straight up and the others are angled inboard.

Assuming you have both carbs you can just swap out the cable brackets. Then the existing cables will work.

He is going from a butterfly to a CV. The cable bracket is on the forward side opposite from the butterfly cab and a totally different animal.

The exposed cable-to-housing length is about 3/4" longer on the pull side for the CV. You can cut down the housing of the original cables and make them work, but it's not worth the effort since the cables are already "relaxed" in the original position and are subject to bind when re-routed for the CV.
