Default What constitutes a Tune Up?

This may sound like a pretty obvious question, or a dumb one, but what actually is done when a bike is Tuned? Not Dyna Tuned or any of that stuff, just a basic, run of the mill, stock standard, routine Tune Up?

Year and model would play into answer. Today' bikes plugs some injector cleaner and ride.
We left the days of points, plugs and condenser behind.

Ahh - you may have left them behind - but I, and a heap of others I think, didn't

I will be converting to points sooner rather than later I'm thinking.

Don't count on this. You'll have to ask whoever is doing the work what "tune up" actually means. Some places are just going to change a bunch of parts whether they actually need changing or not without actually tuning anything. Other places may actually tune your bike, get it running in tip top and only change things that need changing. It can vary wildly from one place to another.

Personally I wouldn't consider changing oil and filters part of a tune up. That is a oil/filter change. In my opinion "tune up" is the labor portion of getting an already running engine to run optimally. From my definition that would definitely include carb tuning but your shop may not share my opinion. Another obstacle is finding someone who actually knows what they are doing with a carb in the first place.

Good luck.

Carb adjustments. My 1996 FB has the factory CV carb on it 26 year old. It has not been touched in that 26 years. Still fires up
every time. Once maybe twice a year a little seafoam in the gas.

Don't they make a product called "Tuneup in a Bottle"?

Bingo.

Back in the day, the heart of a "tune up" was setting the (mechanical) ignition. Filing or replacing points, setting timing, lubricating mechanical advance weights, etc, etc.

That's pretty much behind us now.

There really aren't tune ups in the traditional sense anymore.
