Default Need a little help

1991flhtc, added quick detach for back rest. It has sprung itself or something. While out with the wife it moved. So looking at it, I put the rear docking point in the front hole but it almost fits on one side and not even close on the other. Way to tight.I don't know exactly what has happened because it has been good for several months. Here are pics with docking mounts in rear spots.

Is it bent or are the uprights bent?
Put it on a level surface like a table or workbench and see if its straight.

Quick guess is that a stud holding the docking point in place is bent or possibly one of the cheapie plastic bushings is missing.

How about a picture of backrest mount area without back rest.
What is condition of rear mounting posts and bracket that holds each post?

These can be tricky. In your first picture the black locking tab does not look like it's fully seated and the front point is not fully seated. There appears to be a difference of position between the two pictures.

Don't force anything, but I would detach it and reinstall it carefully.

Stand behind the bike if you can so you can make sure everything is centered and even. Bike on a sidestand can make it tough to get both sides even when you are leaning over from the right side of the bike. Put the front tabs into the the docking points. Make sure they are fully seated forward, the one in your first picture is not.

Press the rotary latches downward carefully and close the latches by pressing the lever as far forward as it goes. It should click into place. If it does not click into place easily you have a misalignment somewhere. Don't force it. I'd be surprised if you have anything actually bent or damaged but its possible.

I'm going to send pics after work today. I will try all the things suggested and take some more pictures. Thanks I set that back rest on a flat surface and nothing appears bent. I measured a few points and measures correct so I'm at a loss. Pictures to follow in a couple hours.

Ok cause, it weren't set up just right. As I put it on I kind of had to squeeze in the sides. I put it on my jack, set the front end into the rubber washers correctly, got behind it and looked. The sides weren't setting where they would just go down. I spaced out the rear docking stations and it still needed just a little tweaking and there you go. I have since found out from the previous owner of the back rest that he had manipulated it to fit his. Explained a whole lot. Thanks for the information and help.
