Picked up '98 Fat Boy w/ 124 S&S +++ Where to find exprtise?
After many (many) years of various bikes including every model of HD touring platform going back to 2007, I decided to get something something that's unlike anything I've owned over 40 years of riding (being conservative so I don't feel quite so old). I'm wondering where in the forums is the right/best place to get help as I learn about this bike and what to do with it as I get it up to my standards for regular operation. I've got a few other bikes for long distance and adv riding so this one is for cruising around town and an occasional day trip.
This is a custom bike. The only Harley OEM is that it’s on a 1998 Fat Boy frame (titled as HD). I have the original S&S Certificate of Origin for the 2002 Super Stock 124 engine. The original owner spent over $42K on it in 2002 then sold to the guy I bought it from in 2012. It has 25K miles on this setup. Pretty sure I did pretty good on the deal so happy on that score. I’ve ridden it a total of 300 feet as I had to get into my warehouse and catch a flight.
I've got 4 pages documenting everything done to the bike including (partial list):
124" S&S engine
Crane HI-4 ignition
Spike Super starter
S&S air cleaner
Samson pipes (I'd like to replace)
Primo belt drive
Hydro clutch
55 MM inverted front end
Progressive rear shocks
Seville chrome front and rear wheels
Perf Machine front and rear brake calipers
Phatail rear kit 240 rear
It needs a rear tire immediately and I will replace all oil lines and fluids ASAP. I'll also be replacing grips, shifter and brake lever covers, and any other imple bolt-on stull he did that I don't like. I need to find an excellent indy shop in the Northern metro area of the front range (CO) as right now it's in storage and my shop (aka big-*** toolbox and a rolling stand - ha) is packed-up.
Where would any of you guys recommend I find expertise on the S&S 124 here in the forums? I don't want to start asking questions in the wrong place and the "Custom Bikes" section does not appear very active. Thanks!!
If you have questions on the S&S 124 post them in one of the engine sections. That is a common motor and Im sure plenty of people have experience with it, plus there most likely isnt anything really "unique" about it. Its still a twin cam, just built by S&S.

Thanks, Jake. My questions will be pretty basic at this point. Things like oil lines (replace with typical rubber lines or?), speedo/tach upgrade (not really an S&S question of course), etc.
Of course, which tires and which oil...Nooooo! ;^)

Wrong, the engine is based on the Evo platform and has a single cam.

youre right its a 98 frame which would be an Evo, I skimmed the first time and thought the 2002 was the year of the bike, not the year the motor was bought, which would have been a twin cam. S&S makes a 124 in both platforms. Still a common, simple Evo just made by S&S and could be asked in the Engine sections
Thanks, Bubba. Yeah, I bought it from just one marginally done picture a couple of chats with the PO then drove 5 hours to get it. Pleased so far.
And brought it home...on a trailer? Why? It sounds like it's just going to be another garage queen bike, rode on days it's only sunny and only if it looks like no bugs might get on it. That ride back home would have told you everything you'd needed and wanted to know about it and what you'd have wanted to do with it after you got home. I guess I'll never be able to wrap my head around owning a bike or bikes and they hardly ever get ridden. I mean, if that's your thing, good for you, I just can't understand it personally.
If an old WL plopped down in front of me, all put back together with 'garage found' parts that were immaculate and coated in cosmoline still, I'd be using that thing! It'd get the same amount of use as my present bike, so that no one of the two gets too worn, and, if one breaks down, I have a spare until the other gets fixed. It's like the saying goes 'You Can't Take It With You When You Die!', so I'm going to enjoy the thing while I have it.
