Evo Bagger Tranny Question
Howdy all.......my '92 bagger has some tranny issues and I'm undecided between instaslling a Baker 6-Speed or just replacing with stock unit. Can anyone tell me what years will fit a 1992 FLHTC as I may go the 'drop in a new (used) one' versus a rebuild. Thanks.......
I've been thinking of the Revtec 6 speed transmission for my 98 FLHTC. The bike has around 185,000 miles. The engine is tired and just doesn't seem to have the power like it use to. The transmission has developed a problem where it is difficult to shift into 4th and 5th. And when I downshift....it grinds in every gear. I have basically just quit riding the bike.
Anyways, I have to do something as well....either replace the transmission with a stock unit or replace it with a six speed. With the engine, I have thought about either rebuilding it myself or let the Harley remanufacture program do it. I gotta do something......

Thanks Pecos...that appears to be true for a gear set change but I believe the cases are different.I'm not sure I want to attempt a gear set change in my garage. I was looking more towards dropping in a complete tranny. How do you like the 6-speed? Did you change it yourself? Good lookin' scooter.

Gear set change you will need a couple of specialty tools.Transmissions are very easy to come by.My last four were all from Ebay, cheap cheap, they are very simple to work on once you are able totake them apart. Bakers, not cheap!Good Luck
Thanks. Am leaning towards dropping in a used one but need to know what years and models will fit without modification. I know they changed in '93 but don't know what previous years will work. Your right about the Bakers, but don't know of anyone else making a 'Drop In' unit for a 92" FLH Evo......

Blue Bagger,
You are correct, my bad. I guess i didn't understand the question. I think a complete change out would be a 1990, 91 or 92. The gearsets work from 90 thru 97 if i am not mistaken. The only real problem with taking the gear set out is getting the inner primary bearing race off the trans mainshaft. after that take the bolts out of the out of the other side and slide the trap door and gearset out in one unit. a lot less trouble than taking the swing arm off blocking the motor up and then getting everything lined back up.
I live in a rural area where i don't use the 6 gear that much. I do on the way to work in the early hrs when there is not a lot of slow folks in the fast lane. I do like it. I don't know that i would put a 6 sp. ina stock evo or not. even with the 107" @70 - 75 it has little power, better at 80 -85, but thats hard to do here. Yes, i did install the 6 speed myself.
Here is a site that covers installation. I did not have all the tools it shows, but I got it done with no problems.

Thanks Paco....I checked out the installation site from Jims. Doesn't seem near as hateful as I imagined. Hoever the parts about reaming out the case to fit the innards has me somewhat concerned. I still think the best route for me is a 'Drop In' assembly vs a gear srt change. If I can come across an OEM tranny at a reasonable price I may just swap it out and try the 6-speed upgrade on my original trans when its out of the bike.

Get the Ultima six speed you don't have to grind out the case and with the money you save you can buy the tools, speedometer recalibrator, and still have change left over. We have installed a number of these and have had no complaints. For those of you that say they can't be good because they don't cost as much as brand XYZ, no problem we can charge you the same price so that you know you spent your money well<BFG>.
BlueBagger,
your trans is identical to mine. There was no grinding or any kind of clearancing to my trans. Straight forward replacement as miacycles stated. and if your worried about the cheap price, buy it and send me the left over money! good luck at whatever you decide.
