jet size for S&Ssuper E big bore
Gentlemen,
does anyone have big bore and S&S super E?
I am wondering what jet sizes you have, particularly the idle jet.
My damn thing doesn't start, after being upgraded to 93.4", 9.5:1, stock stroke.
I put bigger jets, of course, which I eyeballed according to S&S table.
Now if I really try to flood it before cranking, it sneezes a couple of times, and that's it.
What puzzles me that it blows fire sometimes from the pipes, sometimes from the carb, so I cannot even judge if the mixture is too reach or too lean...

What size jets did you put in? Pull the plugs and check for wetness. If it IS the carb ,you probably went to far.If this is a brand new build you just washed down your cylinders which is not good.Timing off?Turn off the accelerator pump first and foremost.Don`t crack the throttle if acc.pump not off.Start off with probably a 30/72 combination and see what that does.I can`t diagnose without more info of what you have and what you did to this point.
As far as the jet size trial and error works best. Start with the middle jet size and move accordingly.
As far as floodingI had the same problem in fact when I gave it the gas she did not respond like I would of liked, until I realized that the SS really pushes allot of gas through the plunger. Bring your plunger setting lower, I had to go allot lower on mine. I mistakingly set it high from the start.
To tell the truth when I set my plunger I did not think that I set it too high from the start.

When you say plunger is that the same as the pump ? I've got an S&S E and if left for a few days its a pig to start. My local Spannerman says they're all like that and change to a mikuni.
I'd really like to keep the S&S and have ordered some bits from XXX carbs .......... Snake oil ?

I can not start my bike for 3-4 weeks and it starts right up.On mine; gas on,pull enrichener, twist the wick 4-times(low setting on acc. pump),push button= KAPRATNAA!!!!

You have a timing issue also . Don't let them tell you that all S&S carb are like that . That is just plane BS . You git it tuned right and it will be great . Until you get it tuned correctly , crack the throttle while you are starting it to see if it helps . You need to close the pump (clock wise) untill the screw bottoms out . Then start with 1 turn out (counter clock wise) from seated . That will get you close to what you need . You can get all the tuning info from the S&S web page . While you are figuring out what jets you need you need to turn the pump off so it doesn't mask other areas .

Washed down the cylinders. Refers to( in this case)when you are starting a fresh motor .When you assembled the cylinders I assume you coated them(pistons/clyinderwalls)with assemby lube or at the very least oil so the rings would not score the cylinders during the initial start up.If you did indeed flood it,the fuel mixture probably" washed" most of the lube off of those areas. When you delve into this let us know what you find as to wet/dry plugs, jet sizes ,etc. Then we can help you more.Regards,Toby Also agree whoeheartedly with js124.S&S are great carbs or they never would have sold a million of them.Get these issues behind you and you will be home free.
Js124 - you are right!
It was a severe timing issue. The case of my mental retardation led to the cam timing retardation all the way down the breather mark! I can't believe that happened to me!
I know why I overlooked it, however - I installed an S&S non-rotating breather with no mark to worry about.
Funny enough, my friend said the symptoms look like cam timing, I agreed but said there is no way I do something stupid like that!
Well, hopefully, since the cam was retarded and not advanced, there was no damage done...
Thanks, gentlemen for your input

After cursing myself and placing the cam properly I've managed to start the beast. seems to be no damage !
However, it starts now almost immediately, cold, with no choke applied at all, no gas pumping, idle mixture is 1.5 turns, and the idle is set to 1200 - 1300. Does this mean my idle jet is too big (32), or SnS is just an excellentlent carb beyond expectations? (I haven't run it for more than 10 - 15 sec in a row, since it is still a thermal break-in)
