Please pardon the dumb question, but does the idle sound change--- as it does on a car when you change the cam?

On a bike with a carb it does.

wouldn't mind more info on this, on my RK I used the 27 and it felt great, running through the gears, but it was noisy. I hear about the S&S cam and the vthunder cam and I wonder if it won't be a better choice.

I went with the EV-46 for my setup at the recommendation of my local H-D master mechanic. The EV-27 was also considered. Couldn't be happier with the 46!

I have an ev-27 in my 99 fatboy. I wouldn't put a cam in it again to save my life. It is going to be noisy after you do it and you will probably not like it. I had a pushrod rubbing also which made even more noise at first. I fixed that and even took the bike to Kendall Johnsons in winston salem to get looked at for the noise. Which he said was completely normal for that cam. The increase in power is not what you would be led to believe either I would leave the stock cam and stop at a air filter and carb jet upgrade.

I am so unhappy with the cam results my bike is for sale.

Our Evos all had noise limiting stuff on them as stock, including a very tame cam and quiet airbox. I found when replacing all that stuff the bike did indeed make a lot more noise! It was mostly induction, not mechanical, the sound of air being sucked in by each cylinder. The bike flew, in contrast with when it was stock, but I routinely wear ear plugs when travelling any distance, so soon ignored it. Got an S&S 107 in it now - that ain't quiet either!
