Default 1983 flhtc bike// what to expect?

Hello, I just bought a 1983 FLHTC & it has a 2007 EVO Motor w/2000+ miles on the motor..I dont know much about the good & bad's when it comes to the EVO motors....But can someone w/expirence let me know what to expect as time rolls on ? It has a new s&s carb w/hooker headers w/hi-low setting. Thank you

Well to start with unless someone is saying they put a rebuilt in 2007 EVO motor in a shovel touring frame you don't have an EVO motor, you may want to do a bit more research.

A friend of mine had an 83 FLHT. It had a Shovelhead motor and enclosed oil bath rear chain. Sound like maybe someone bought an Evo motor and swapped it out. What is the rear drive now? What kind of title did you get with it. That not being the right motor you might want to have some kind of paper work proving where that Evo motor came from. Just my thoughts.

Yeah, more details. HD was not making Evos in 2007. Is it a HD twinky or an S&S or Ultima Evo, or what? A good paperwork trail will be necessary for you too.

Hey Qualude714,

Congrats on the bike. In 83 HD had the shovel in the old 4 speed frame that was a rigid mount and also in the newer 5 speed frame with a shovle ithat was rubber mount in it as well.

The EVO is taller than the Shovel, so there is no way to put a EVO into the stock Shovel 4 speed frame without either cutting and modifying the frame or using an aftermarket evo motor that is shorter and will fit (S&S ). Looks like you picked up one of the 5 speed framed ones and someone replaced the shovel with a evo.

As far as Vin numbers go, barring that the motor was stolen and the vin on the motor comes up as stolen if a cop were to search a big database, there is no big issue with the motor being replaced and running it.

Harley Vin 1981 - 2000 big Twins

Beginiing in 1981, Harley started using a 17 digit VIN number on the frame and an abreviated VIN on the engine case.

As always, the legal title must match the VIN number on the frame for these year big twins.

If the title on the Frame VIN reads

1HD1DDK12BZ123456

the engine case number should read something like
K12BZ123456

The Frame numbers
1HD1DD indicate the type of frame it is
in this case the DD = FLHT

The FRAME Number must match the title in order for the bike to be "legal"


So - to answer your question there are "basically" 2 styles of EVO motors that could be in your frame and things to keep in mind.

84 to mid 91 - they were the bottom breathers, meaning the motor pressure is vented to go to a tube/hose and spit any mist or overflow to the ground. These had the good torrington B138 cam bearing installed from the factory and the older style A lifters with smaller rollers that should be swapped out for the new B lifters.

92 to 98 - the top breathers, the vent the motor pressure through the heads with little umbrella valves and route the mist to the carb in order to be burned off. They have the ina cam bearing that needs to be replaced, but should have the good b style lifters.

They are solid motors and with any evo if you replace the base, head and rocker box gaskets and run them sanely they will last for a long time. reccomend that you replace the cam bearing with a torrignton b 138 and a set of B lifters along with new gaskets if they are leaking and run it. Yes, there are various engine case upgrades and slight differences between the years, but in general the 2 main styles are described above and the upgrades/repairs to a stock motor apply.

Welcome to HDH. We need some photos of this bike! Can't progress much further without. Sounds as if you have something interesting, as you might gather from the replies so far. Given more info we can help!

The original poster said it's an FLHTC. The T means it is the 5 speed rubber mount frame. An evo will fit right in that frame. Some states may give grief about the different engine numbers though.

You can still get brand new crate 99 EVO motor from Harley for less than $3,000.00. Several of the guys on here have done that when building up a hardtail chopper. I am guessing the op was talking about that being the case with it being a 99 EVO installed in 07.

I thought the same thing Jim.

QL-714, Welcome and good luck. Sounds like a neat bike with a nice newer evo motor.
Like some others said, just find out what you got. Might be worth a hour or two with a good shop for service and ask them to help you determine what all you got.
