open belt starter problem
help quick. im looking at a $500 purse for the loudest bike and this weeks ralley. bdl belt drive jack shaft wont engage the ring gear. i made it there, then had to push start it to get home. i put out 131 decibels and have to do the finals tomorrow, but have to be able to start the bike. anyone done any quick fixzes on these to get it going?
Did it used to work and now it doesn't? If it was me I would pull the jackshaft and unfreeze whatever is sticking.
There isn't a quick fix because if you jam the shaft out so it engages all the time your starter will melt.
You could make it so it manually engages and then knock it back out of enagement when its running but you could hurt yourself.

got it fixed. if anyone else runs into this problem, here is the quick fix to ride until your bullet pruf jack shaft shows up. ultima springs are weak and flatten out go to the hardware store and get a better spring the same size and it works like new again.
behind the jackshaft. when i pulled the jack shaft out the spring had tangled itself up overlapping itself making the jackshaft not long enough to engage and just slapping around inside

at 132.4 decibles i came in 4th place.
i called it good considering this would have been 3 years in a row winning, but multiple others argued with the judges that it wasnt fair that the decible meter, although the same distance from the rear tire on every bike was not the same distance from the pipes. all 3 cash winners had true duals sticking 2 or 3 feet out past the rear tire, where as mine dump right at the trans, making them around 7 feet closer to the decible reader than me. the decible reader was placed 4 feet behind the rear tire, so some of these guys damn near had the meter inside there pipes.
end result was an agreement it was unfair but the cash was already handed out and next year decible readers will be measured from the pipe not the wheel.

D'oh!!! You'd have thought the judges would have worked that out beforehand....
Better luck next year :-)
