Default 1st timer with couple questions

Well here we go. So first big twin not too bad so far. Bought the bike pretty cheap from a friend but had my first taste of owning a Harley. Blew a head gasket 90% my fault, not letting it warm up all the way before trying to ride it like my old buell. So instead of paying some garage did it my self and darn glad I didn't pay them a dime. It was was no rocket science. Until putting my fuel injection back together, now it will idle at about 1050 until I ride a ways then it will not idle at all and oil light comes on. Then I turn it off and bam back to 1050 for the next time I get to a light pull the clutch in and back to no idle. Second question is how warm are these things suppose to get I feel heat but I don't know how much heat I'm suppose to feel? Other than that I'm hooked I got 700 miles on it this year. And hence being in wisconsin 400 of those miles were done with snow on the ground yet.

This ain't gonna please you but I'll say it anyway. But first..
Welcome to the forum! Congratulations and let me be among the 1st to spend your money for you.

There are several threads, active too, that have members ditching the MMI for a carburetor. If this ain't your thing because you want to see it through and fix it then there is a good amount of info there as well. I would appreciate one of us fixing the FI.

Hey man welcome and good luck.

The MMI ain't that bad anyway it just doesn't lend itself to a high HP/TQ monster that is all. The bad rap comes from the stealers not working on older iron and few and far between knowledgeable indies.

Cool

Tee&Vee its not about spending money it ran fine before I replaced the gaskets. Just wondering if there were an adjustment on the throttle housing because thats all that i took off of it when i removed it. Went to the dealer here in town and they had no info to offer unless I put it in there shop and get raped by there lame a$$es. Which brings up anouther question or just a rant but anyways, When you walk into a dealership why is it that most of them are full of snobby a$$ corporate aceholes. I thought owning one of these things was full of people that enjoy seening other people with the same pationate for riding.I get better treatment walking into the suzuki dealer than I do at the Harley Dealer. Yeah more of a rant but Ill keep tring to plug away at this thing I enjoy riding it.

I'm going with something isn't hooked up when you put it back together. Or you broke the engine temp sensor, which I think is a common problem on that EFI system.

So let me get this straight. You blew a head gasket because you didn't warm it up. That's a new one on me.

It ran fine before you tore into it.

Why then, did you change the head gaskets?
You seem somewhat angry about HD's choice of employees. Guess you got a bad batch. The parts guys as well as the shop guys at my HD dealership are as good as gold. Can't say the same for the sales staff, but only because I've never dealt with them.
Hope you get it figured out though.

Have to say I have not seen that at my local dealership (House of Thunder, Morgan Hill, Ca). They have been very good helping me locate obsolete parts on a Shovel and Evo

Sometimes I think you walk into a dealership expecting a certain reaction and you will get it.

They do not make a lot of money off me (I only use HD oil and filters) but I appreciate their help in finding dealerships with the parts I need and make sure to let them know that.

ElectraBRF, you have written more rude comments about dealers than about your bike. Leave the crap out and concentrate on telling us about your bike, so we can help you getting it running right!

We get a steady trickle of newcomers on HDF with exactly the same problem! If everything was working fine before you pulled your bike apart, then something hasn't gone back right. The simple truth is you have not reassembled it exactly as it was before. You need to retrace your steps very carefully, to check everything you have disturbed, and put right what is currently not right.

Let us know what you find, and best of luck.

All of the motorcycle coppers I know just start it and take off. That said, they don't own their rides. Generally, I wait about a minute and ride it gently for about the first 5 miles. A

About HD dealers...they treat me really well and most go out of their way to try and locate obsolete parts for my bike.

Where are you in WI? There are many good dealers.

You know that you can't expect them to diagnose the problem on a bike they haven't examined. And they are not going to give you free advice, because then you will be on here bitching that they didn't give you the right advice. Sometimes you have to pay for a qualified mechanic. You think it is easy, but you are finding out it isn't.

I am an optometrist. I get people ignoring my directions, going on the internet, listening to their friends. Then when their eye is dripping and red, they want me to fix it for free.

You have come to the right place for free advice, though. Good luck.
