Did the odometer stop working too? If so, I bet it did, then...
Take off your dash and carefully remove the rubber boot that weatherproofs the electrics then unscrew the speedo drive. I would jack the front wheel off the ground and spin it. This is easier if another person can help to spin and you can see the male end of the speedo cable. You want to see if it is moving, spinning to ensure that it is working. If it ain't working then it is a good bet the speedo is cool but the drive or the cable is bad.
The drive is not serviceable per se because the worm gear is a bytch to remove the tiny flathead set screw. The drive from DS is $33. The cable varies by color and by manufacturer, length (stock vs ape height) etc...
I have not test for the drive or the cable. If you have owned the bike for awhile you can swap both of these out for less than $75.
The drive is the right side spacer and on my two bikes that have new drives and cables neither of them had a spacer in the brake/speedo side. The visual test would be if the drive notch is in the hub.rotor assembly.
On my 1995 flstc my drive was seized but I guessed wrong an bought a new cable then I discovered the crap drive because I installed the cable.
On my 1998 fltr I, having previous experience, decided that the drive MUST be bad and replaced it only to spin and have 0 miles to be reading after furiously spinning the wheel for miles.
The good part that this stocker cable was $18 from my favorite indy shop.
Good luck!

It is possible that you are seeing it wrong and the drive has seized up and pulled the tab from the slot.
Found problem it is a newer hub has anyone put a trans speed gear on this to remove the speed gear onthe rim

I will say that on the JJ I have seen people go to the rear wheel for their speedo drives because they go over to aftermarket springer front ends.
Please update WHATEVER you do 'cuz I'm interested.
thanks,

That isn't practical! What is the wheel it currently has? There may be a way around this.
