Default I fixed my stripped oil drain plug today

Just wanted to share this,

I stripped my drain plug on my 1995 Ultra Classic .
What I ended up doing was purchasing a 1" lg 1/2" 20 UNC Hex Hd Bolt.
The original plug only measures 1/2" lg and there was approximately 3/8" to 7/16" more threads in the drain spout untouched.
So I wrapped the new bolt with Teflon taped, added an O-Ring and snugged it up tight.

I bet I will start using a torque wrench now!

I get my drain plugs finger tight, and then give a light snug with a ratchet... No need for a torque wrench. The PO stripped my transmission drain plug; had to heli-coil it. Some things dont need to be gorilla tight.

I stripped the oil drain plug on my 2012 SG today, WTF pissed me off. I was using a ratchet but I am always careful on the torque.

The book calls for 14-21 ftlb, that is actually fairly tight, I wasn't using a torque wrench but that M@#$%$^ stripped awful easy.

i have seen more than a few bikes with the automotive oil plug two piece fix in them back in the day we had plenty of them around the shop - the out side thread is a self tapper and it has in the center a 1/8 tapered pipe plug to remove to drain the oil and leave the self tapper in place - works real well - when guys call and ask me what to bring on a cross country trip that is one of the things i recommend as you will never expect that to happen on a trip -- johnjzjz

When I bought my bike, both the tranny and engine oil drain threads were stripped. A 1/2 inch Single oversize drain plug from any parts house will fix both holes. It's cuts new threads as you screw it in. Remove it and flush the chips out with some sea foam and reinstall it, good as new. A mechanic from the Harley dealer actually gave me this free advice.

Default drain plugs

it's not our fault a steel plug in an aluminum hole in and out as much as we change our oil and the threads just wear out
