my brothers streetglide primary drain plug stripped coming out last night, first time the oil been change too. anyway, does anyone know what size timesert or heli coil this takes to fix? thanks.
I just replaced my pan, seems like it wasn't much over a $100. I've had so so luck with heli coils in the past on cars, so I didn't want toeven hassle with it this time.
What made me mad about it was that I used a torque wrench when I put the plug back on. The Harley mechanic told me that they had stripped several plugs at Harleys recommended torque setting, so now they just get them snug.
this is the primary chain case drain plug i am talking about, not the oil pan drain plug. i can't believe these drain plugs would strip this easy. this is the first time this plug has been taken out from factory new.
Id Heli coil it. Then you know you have steel threads instead of aluminum threads in there. Im sure timeserts are good but I have a whole box of Helicoils so till those are gone thats what I have.
How did it strip unscrewing it? Or did it strip after you attempted to reinstall the plug?
first time the plug has been out. he said the threads came out when he pulled the plug, said it was hard coming out the whole time he was unscrewing it. i'm guessing it was installed incorrectly from the factory. i have not seen it yet,but was thinking a time sert or helicoil would be the fix. i also was thinking about a self tapping oversize drain plug from the auto parts store.

Should be a warrantee issue then. Of course good luck with that.

that's what i was thinking also, but their going to say he stripped it, so not even going down that road, gonna fix it ourselves and be done with it. just kinda sucks that it happened right from the factory and he's pretty pissed about it. where's the quality control, is anybody paying attention when they are putting these things together? when i bought my new bike there was all kinds of lose stuff on it, but as so as i buy anything i come home and go over it and make sure everythings tight and right.
