Now I have to find out if higher comp. came from shaving the head and changing the gasket.

How do you know it has/had higher compression?
Did you do a compression test before you took it apart?

I think he's basing that idea off the fact that it had a cam with a grind that is designed for higher compression.

I pulled out a old andrews can book where the ev51 recommendations for higher compression is stated but no where did it say you had to lol. Maybe he just needed it on the top end for a light bike and the others laid down to fast. Maybe it was a ebay steal or even the possibility the real cam he wanted was out of stock and this is all they had. I would find lots more to worry about other than a used cam that can be replaced for $130

That's it exactly.
As I said in the beginning, I got the motor on ebay with no info other than it cam from a 95 fat boy.
So naturally I had to see what was there. Found the adjustable rods which says "hey, I have some cam in me!" so I pull the cam and it says ev51, so I look up ev51 and guess what, it's for modified motors.
So I dig deeper and find stock rockers, fairly newly redone stock pistons, stock stroke, etc. so I'm a little bummed. So I start pondering maybe, just maybe they had the smarts to shave the heads to increase compression.
And that's why I asked if there was a way to tell if the heads were cut. This would at least somewhat make the cam choice reasonable.

I guess if you have the heads off now why not freshen them up and do some porting at this point?? What the heck pistons and a straight cyl wall along with the head work would save you from buying another cam
