Picked up a 95 evo motor off of ebay, no good info on the motor. Found adjustable lifter rods and then an ev-51 cam. Also found .010 stock pistons, stock 4 1/4 stroke.
Andrews says the cam is for modified motors with 9-10 CR.
So if the crank is stock and the piston is stock maybe the heads were decked?
How can you tell if the heads have been shaved to increase compression?

Just because someone put in a cam and adjustable doesn't mean they did anything else to raise compression.
When you say a 95 motor I hope your talking about the year because nothing about that motor says that it was ever anything bigger.
I'm willing to bet the PO just changed cam and pushrods.
Just my 2 cents.

Yes, 1995 motor, and yes I am reaching for a reason to think they didn't just throw too much cam in this motor. A decked head is my last ditch hope.
If not, my dilemma is to either buld the motor to fit the cam or get the right cam for the motor.
Suggestions?
i would just freshen the motor with all the cometic gaskets and put piston rings in it
have the heads gone into and see whats up with that then pick a cam for your riding style
most on this site seem to like the andrews EV 27 to me its small but it does do the job and lots of guys ride long and hard and it fits that riding style soooo

what is it you are looking to do
Well when I found the ev-51 I was hoping to find more treasure inside since that cam is made for a modified motor. Now I'm dealing with the disappointment that it was not better built. The pistons and rings are fresh, showing little carbon and honing marks on walls. this further annoys me that they did this work and didn't add higher comp pistons. Now I have to find out if higher comp. came from shaving the head and changing the gasket.

after reading this i guess you will end up back in this section asking why it came apart so soon and what do i do now -
I guess my take is you bought a motor thinking it was all done and with cool mods well its not - sooo now what -- 9- 1/4 to one is all you can do compression wise if you expect to drive it like you stole it - the biggest cam i would use IF andrews is what your looking at is the EV 45 its raspy and 3000 is the sweet spot - use a set of moly rings throw away what is in it too many words to type to explain Y - change the inner cam bearing check the cam gear fit a dial gage - use the .030 head gaskets cometic - and mod the carb if its a CV if its a S&S the yost tube works but one jet down from what was in a tuned correctly - b hive the springs in the heads with a valve job the blue rubber seals are the best the tin one are garbage - single fire it like the ultma ignition and a dyna coil -- and be happy with that
