Default Cran HI 4 Dual Fire Ignition

I have this ignition system on my bike. It is a custom built with an 97 Evo engine. Today while riding, the bike just shut down. All lights still on but, no fire. After a few minutes, fired back up and ran fine, for a while. In about 8 miles it shut down 3 more times. Finally made it back home. Checked the wiring at the ignition switch, fixed a couple of suspect wires and it cranked right back up. Took it for a test ride and after about 5 miles, same thing. I took the ignition cover off and looked at the ignition module, it was pretty warm. The red light was on with the key on but would not start. Unfortunately I didn't notice if the red light was flashing while cranking. Will these go out all together or can there be an intermittent issue? Is there a way to test this? Thanks for any suggestions.

Maybe overheated but a lot of the smarter guys on this forum have said that Crane has gone to crap. I don't know if this is true or untrue. If it has overheated then the bad news is that I have not heard of anybody ever successfully fixing a sealed unit.

The crane ignitions had a lot of problems. Search the site here and you will find many people with the exact same setup and problem as you are experiencing. Crane went bankrupt for a reason, apparently. Those that have the version that doesn't all fit inside the cone have had better luck, and S&S bought what was left of Crane at the bankruptcy, so the newer stuff may be better. S&S makes good stuff and I can't see them selling a known problem ignition.

So, replace the ignition and you should be OK. If you can, get one that doesn't all fit in the cone. Heat and electronics don't get along.

I checked out the S&S website. Doesn't appear that they have anything for an 80" Evo unless I'm missing something. Are they building the Cran modules now also?

JP has a bunch:

S&S owns Crane now, but the parts still say "Crane." People like that Ultima ignition. I would look into that.

I checked out the Ultima Ignition system. Has good reviews and the price is right. Is there any advantage of going from a dual fire to a single fire? Any other adjustments need to be made? Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it.
