Default Tuning

Hello Everyone,

I'm a newbie and a novice rider. My fiance's 2004 huggerwas sitting for a couple years in a shed in VA until she picked it up a few months back and brought it to FL to live with us. I replaced the spark plugs, drained the carb of the old gas, cleared the lines, put in new fuel and dropped in a new battery. She started up but only with the choke on. I tuned it down to idle properly but when ever I try to release the choke she sputters out. I am not really familiar with carb systems. What would I need to do to get this baby running smoothly. It seems to ride well until I get to a stop sign and then it seems to idle really high then settle down but still seems like its revving to high. We are little strapped for cash so I would like to atleast make an attempt to try to do it myself. Any recommendations? It would be greatly appreciated. We would like to use it to commute to work since gas is so high. Thanks in advance.

When bikes sit with any gas in them the gas turns to varnish. My wrench brings oldbikes to life all the time just cleaning the carbs out. I will find out what he uses to clean them and let you know. I am taking a ride over to see if my chopper has made it to the lift yet.

'sea foam' or 'Marvelous mystery oil' in the tank of fresh gas.......
let it idle on high (choke) and see if that doesn't help.
Take it out and run it HIGH....(third gear at 40 MPH, 4th gear at fifty)
for a few miles. Of course, new plugs wouldn't hurt if you don't know when
they were NEW before.
Your air filter is clean.....yes? (that should keep you busy......)

Try spraying down the inside of the carb with carb cleaner. Then start motor. You may have to twist the throttleopenabout half just to get it started.Run it till warm. Then you can try to clear out the idle circuit and main jet by reving motor to about 3000 rpm and without releasing the throttle, cover the opening of the carb till it almost dies then removeyour hand andlet it rev up again. Try it a couple of times. Also, check the intake for a vacuum leaks. You can shoot carb cleanat the intake but you need to be carefull due to its flammability. Just shoot quick spurts at the base of both carb and intake and see if rpm goes up.It helps when you have a mechanic for a friend that can help you out.
